What does this offer over mirrormanager? I could see it being useful to list mirrors in a GUI, but I'm not convinced the speed testing is doing anything helpful.
  • GUIDE: How packages get from Fedora to you, and where to look for news!
    1 project | /r/Fedora | 11 Aug 2022
With the normal behavior (fastestmirror=False), your system connects to the Fedora Mirror Manager which uses complex heuristics to generate a ranked list of the absolute best mirrors for you (out of the total list of around 400 public mirrors), based on your geolocation, what mirrors near you are the most up-to-date at the moment, whether a mirror's bandwidth is overloaded at the moment or not (load balancing), etc. This guarantees that you get very good mirrors for your current location and that those mirrors are up-to-date.
  • How does Fedora update the mirror list?
    1 project | /r/Fedora | 9 Apr 2022
Fedora runs a mirror manager which automatically determines which mirrors are up-to-date. Mirrors that are not up-to-date, or are unavailable, get removed from the mirror list served to end-users.
  • Why fastestmirror is not enabled by default in dnf.conf? What are the consequences of enabling it?
    1 project | /r/Fedora | 27 Jun 2021
Fedora’s Mirror Manager hands out mirrors that are the most appropriate to the client connecting. It uses a more complex heuristic than fastest mirror, which just measures http responses, so it should be sufficient.
