How is D2 classic (pre-LoD) to play at this point?
Either you go the D2R Route (very different from d2 1.0). Or you install something like https://github.com/fearedbliss/Cactus for easy switching of versions on D2.

Was Diablo 2 harder before expansion?
You can try out Cactus, which helps to switch to different patch version, including 1.00

Ported a save from 1.05b to D2R. Old items are strange
Also, if you are not using it yet, Cactus is a great and easy to use tool to setup a multi-version Diablo II installation. Allows you to easily switch between a whole bunch of versions.

Any fans of playing old versions? A collection of some LOD 1.07 gear.
No problem, I used to use D2SE for 1.07 as well at first. It was alright but after finding Cactus there was no going back. I'd also suggest getting Singling as well.

A few single player mods that I made
They're all just edited text files and can be easily installed by downloading the most recent release, extracting the files, copying the data folders for any mods you want to use into your Diablo II game directory, and adding the -direct -txt parameters to the shortcut you use for launching the game. You can also load them by adding -direct -txt to the Param= line in your PlugY config file.

I made a few really simple mods for single player and thought I would share them in case anyone's interested. There's also a README that contains a list of the mods and their features, installation instructions, and additional notes.

The grind was real this beta weekend
I also created a mod that works with 1.09 which increases the stack size of keys to 50, tomes to 80, arrows/bolts to 500, and allows mana potions to be bought from vendors (you could normally only buy health pots in 1.09).
