What should I build my husband?
Looks like Home Assistant can be triggered with NFC Tags: https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/tag AND they have directions for a standalone tag reader! https://github.com/adonno/tagreader

esp8266 stops working after I solder it
I'm not totally sure what you mean by that. Basically I watched a few videos on soldering basics, and then followed the diagram labeled "connecting the components" on the adonno tag reader page. Are there more things I need to connect? I assumed anything that would need connecting would be in the diagram. There's also a good chance that I misunderstood something in the diagram or even didn't follow it correctly.

Are there wearable devices to read and activate NFC tags?
You could buy an NFC ring or similar product , then just scan it on something like this. For different automations on the same nfc tag just have multiple readers.

Web.esphome.io says "failed to execute 'open' on 'SerialPort': Failed to open serial port.
I'm trying to create the Adonno Tag Reader for HA, but I'm having trouble flashing anything to my ESP device. I have an ESP8266 (the one recommended by the project) and I keep getting the above message. It also fails when I plug directly into the NUC running HA. I've installed all the drivers suggested by web.esphome.io.
- Static noise coming from passive buzzer. Changed almost every part and still an issue. NOT an issue when power is coming directly from the D1 mini.

NFC Tag Lights (No Phone)
You can build an nfc scanner like this https://github.com/adonno/tagreader (is built for home assistant) and then trigger lights from scanning a tag (or tags) against that. I use this to let my kids change the lights in their bedroom.

Need some insight/help in reverse engineering a skylanders portal as a NFC scanner
After purchasing more figurines I also stumbled across a cheap second hand skylanders portal and thought it would be a simple conversion. Remove the old hardware and hotglue a DIY NFC scanner in like it is written out here: https://github.com/adonno/tagreader
