ergoemacs-mode VS unicode-fonts

It's a tiny tweak that gives something like 1% of the functionality.

If you start with framework you might not learn enough to solve problems later, but using it later to simplify your config should be ok. For example ergoemacs http://ergoemacs.github.io/ is a nice way to make Emacs more ergonomic and easier to use(if having problems with default configuration).

For example I use https://github.com/ergoemacs/ergoemacs-mode, with some commands that I have acquired as muscle memory from using Emacs/mg for long. And still I use nano when I need to do small edits to a file. I also do it almost without thinking about it, especially when doing "sudo nano whatever". Mg should be better for me, but nano is engraved into my palms for some reason.

That documentation seems very outdated. The changelog is from 2013 and that function was removed (according to an issue) before 2015.

Xah Lee and friends maintains a mode called ErgoEmacs that implements most of the changes he proposed: https://github.com/ergoemacs/ergoemacs-mode

It's a more annoying problem than I wish it was. You could try https://github.com/rolandwalker/unicode-fonts , which worked for increasing Unicode coverage for me, though I elected to not include it in my personal config due to the relatively lengthy setup.

I've found a solution from here: install unicode-fonts and run unicode-fonts-setup on startup.

Regarding your long lines issue - from your description it sounds instead like an unicode issue which I also ran into a while back.

What happens is that your main programming font does not have the unicode characters, so Emacs falls back to searching all your fonts for each character it can't find, which is slow if it has to search through many different fonts.

The solution is to ensure you have symbol fonts installed - see the list of fonts here: https://github.com/rolandwalker/unicode-fonts

When I open the same page in the terminal there are no extra characters displayed. I installed and configured unicode-fonts but did not help.

Try to go through the README of unicode-fonts (install the fonts recommended). And put this in your configuration: emacs-lisp (use-package unicode-fonts :ensure t :config (unicode-fonts-setup)) Font issues are usually not fixable in Emacs. It's an external problem.
