Does anyone know a reliable/safe Nintendo Switch emulator + where to download said emulator along with games for it? (ie. Pokemon Sword, Breath of the Wild)
Additionally, for the best emulation performance, you need the recent firmware and also title keys to even launch the games. For this, you should download a tool called EmuSak (https://github.com/CapitaineJSparrow/emusak-ui/releases/tag/v2.1.9), which also includes shader downloads for certain games to prevent stuttering during compilations. Just simply point it to the directory of the emulator you're using - it works for both Ryujinx and Yuzu - then install the firmware and download keys.

In a simple attempt to update my game to 1.1, now TOTK doesn't even appear in Yuzu and gives me an error message.
You CAN NOT use the most recent keys (16.0.2) for TOTK. You have to use the older ones (16.0.1) to run it. In order to install update 1.1, you have to downpatch the update NSP using Switch Army Knife (SAK). Put your newer keys into SAK’s bin folder and then downpatch the NSP. Then ensure you have the older keys in Yuzu’s key folder, install the update, and then run the game.

installing XCI instead of NSP on the switch
use dbi or tinwoo. if you want to convert the xci to nsp you can do that using switch army knife and install it using whatever method you were using before.

It's because you're trying to install it from a XCI file. It isn't recommended to do that and most times won't work when doing so. Try using an XCI to NSP converter. Here's one I found: https://github.com/dezem/SAK though you need a fully-populated keys.dat file for it to work. But you can just do that from Lockpick_RCM.

No but yes. While obviously there is no official way, a tool called switch army knife can patch games to run on lower firmwares.
