I used https://github.com/millejoh/emacs-ipython-notebook at one employer and it works quite well for Jupyter. Of course Org is great but if your coworkers are unfamiliar it's probably a non-starter.

Looking at https://github.com/millejoh/emacs-ipython-notebook/issues this person seems to be using the github issues tracker as a combination of their personal tech support line + ranting board.

Maybe Emacs should have went down the road to have good Jupyter notebooks support instead, even EIN's maintainer was advising against using notebooks.

Except when it doesn't work. I tried using it a few months ago on both Windows and WSL, but I had to give up. Surprisingly, EIN¹ running a Maxima kernel worked.

I was going to try again before commenting, but I broke my WSL setup last week and didn't have time to fix it yet, but I sure will try it again next month.

EIN also looks good but I haven't used it.

From my perspective when I had to turn ML models from a "real scientist" to something I could use in production, emacs-ipython-notebooks[1] was immensely helpful for me, since it allowed to connect to the jupyter server and edit and copy things from emacs to other code places as if I'm looking at an org mode file.

I see the appeal of Jupyter notebooks for someone testing out things or experimenting, but it's a bit like a brain dump that isn't that trivial to navigate around when a second or third person is involved.

Hey all! I'm quite attracted by the Emacs IPython Notebook (ein) package and would love to incorporate it into my workflow. However last time I tried (about a year and a half ago) it was officially unsupported in spacemacs and my experiments led to constant headaches like undotree failing, notebooks not saving, native compilation crashing, and a reliance on elpy for IDE features (afaik the only elpy layer available can be found here, uses ESS bindings, and seems to be orphaned.)

But the short answer is no. Not yet.

I'm pretty happy just letting the standalone agent write to the file and then reloading it in my editor.

Though I wish the agent CLI tools would use something like inotify to notice when I've made a manual change to the file and then do a better job of incorporating that change as feedback to inform future edits.

Recently, I’ve been working on my hobby project, keyglide. It’s a small tool that lets you practice editing a "start" file in a real Helix editor (https://helix-editor.com/) until it matches a given "goal" file. Once you complete the exercise, your score - including keystrokes and time taken - is published. Scores are then ranked by the amount of keystrokes.

Although I’ve been using Helix for a few years, I still don’t feel particularly efficient with it. This little game is meant to help me (and hopefully others) compare editing approaches and discover more effective ways to work.

You can easily try it out without signing in.

Just out of curiosity, what issue did you encounter? I have a quite customized emacs, and the only lag I really notice between Linux and macOS is in magit, where operations are noticeably slower.

Fancy giving a shot to Helix[0]? Not even is it pretty good out of the box, it has a scheme extension language in the work.

I know that there's no such thing as a unique name, but the fact that https://helix-editor.com/ is a living project, first released in May 2021, might mean that using "Helix" for this project, first released in November 2024, isn't the best choice of name. Or at least it might be worth a disclaimer in the readme!

Helix was great until I discovered something that was a dealbreaker for me. They treat newline character as a normal character which is just very very non intuitive. I just wish there was option for behavior same as vim does. https://github.com/helix-editor/helix/issues/2956

Lots of vim/emacs mentions so I feel obliged to mention Helix (https://helix-editor.com/). Used neovim for _years_, tried Helix for a few weeks and never looked back

I’m not sure. Command based editing opens more doors than just optimizing keystrokes. There are edits I somewhat regularly do with Vim macros that save me minutes of typing and cognitive burden of examining refactor locations. It’s probably not going to be make or break, but I do think it’s significant in a p > 0.05 sense.

I imagine Vim is only just a local optima too. There are newer editors [0] that are more AST aware that I haven’t been able to fairly evaluate yet (not in the boring corp approved software list).
