savannah.gnu.org DNS problems?
(and thinking about strategies around this. there is elpa-mirror, which allows for the creation of local Emacs package repos, but I wonder about a good way of automating periodic updates to the mirrored repo without necessarily updating the packages of the local running Emacs.)

Am I ignoring something much better?(Thinking of vim to emacs, need help)
You can also create your own local repo from installed packages, see https://github.com/redguardtoo/elpa-mirror

Lazy loading and lazy installation of packages
You could use https://github.com/redguardtoo/elpa-mirror before migrating your setup. The elpa-mirror create a local repository from you installed packages. Then you can use the local repository to replace remote repository during migration. As its README said, "15 seconds to install 115 packages".

melpa mirror on air-gapped network
Thanks for that. I downloaded a .zip from this resource which is maintained with elpa-mirror. I unpacked the .zip on the walled-off system, and I now have an up-to-date package archive online after modifying my ~/.emacs.d/init.el.

What's the recommended way to work with multiple package archives?
Besides, I use https://github.com/redguardtoo/elpa-mirror to create my local package repository in case GNU elpa or melpa is shutdown.

Any fun ways to learn Emacs?
Using meow:https://github.com/meow-edit/meow I actually got keybindings in Emacs that are helix-like, so I use helix for certain projects and Emacs for others.
The muscle memory transfers well.

Helix: Release 24.03 Highlights
Thanks for the tip, meow looks interesting. I never got comfortable in evil-mode, but perhaps meow could be a gateway to trying emacs in anger.
Still waiting for kakoune/helix mode for gnu readline...

You have to go further for ideal IMO.
Evil and evil-collection integrates pretty well, but Meow integrates perfectly and uses the action visible first approach.

Packages that you would like to be in emacs core ?
I think I'd rather hope for meow over Evil. It's close to Evil but embraces more of emacs' default bindings for calling commands.

Devil Mode for Emacs
There's also Meow[1], which I currently use. You have to configure it first to suit your keyboard layout, but there are pre-built configs [2]

Is it possible to make god-mode turn off automatically after a command?
I was thinking about this a little more and Meow has something known as keypad mode that basically lets you call key combinations then return to Normal mode. It behaves a lot like god-mode. I just tested it out and if you install Meow you can call keypad-mode from insert and then automatically return to insert mode.
