doris VS Trino

As an open-source real-time data warehouse, Apache Doris provides semi-structured data processing capabilities, and the newly-released version 2.1.0 makes a stride in this direction. Before V2.1, Apache Doris stores semi-structured data as JSON files. However, during query execution, the real-time parsing of JSON data leads to high CPU and I/O consumption in addition to high query latency, especially when the dataset is huge and complicated. Moreover, the lack of a pre-defined schema means there is no handle for query optimization.

As you can imagine, a long and complicated data pipeline is high-maintenance and detrimental to development efficiency. Moreover, they are not capable of ad-hoc queries. So as an upgrade to our data warehouse, we replaced most of these components with Apache Doris, a unified analytic database.

https://github.com/apache/doris Is a great example. Same for it's cousin https://github.com/StarRocks/starrocks that was an early fork of the doris project.

To be fair, these are the only examples I can think of and I only learned of these as I'm standing up new data infra using starrocks.

So, in Storage Architecture 2.0, we introduced Apache Doris and Apache Spark. The whole data pipeline was a Y-shaped diagram.

We decided not to waste time reinventing the wheel and simply installed Trino on our servers. It’s a full featured SQL query engine that works on your data. Now our analysts can use it to work with data from AppMetr and execute queries at different levels of complexity.

DevRel for StarRocks. Trino doesn't have a great caching layer (https://github.com/trinodb/trino/pull/16375) and performance (https://github.com/trinodb/trino/issues/14237) and https://github.com/oap-project/Gluten-Trino. In benchmarks and community user testing, StarRocks has outperformed.

What if my SQL engine is Presto, Trino [1], or a similar query engine? If it's federating multiple source databases we peel the SQL back and get... SQL? Or you peel the SQL back and get... S3 + Mongo + Hadoop? Junior analysts would work at 1/10th the speed if they had to use those raw.

The good thing is that the concepts in terms to the SQL supported by Trino transfers between them all. So its completely reasonable to start with one and move to another. In fact that is something that happens regularly. I invite to you check out the talks from the Trino Fest event that is just wrapping up today. AFAIK Presto was forked and Trino https://trino.io/ is now the leading SQL Query engine .
