Can I access docker containers on a machine by separate host names?
Unfortunately not. I haven't heard of anything that automated. The most abstraction from editing and maintaining zone files by hand would be something like power DNS with a web interface (https://github.com/pschiffe/docker-pdns) but that is still managed manually.
