i made a navigation aide for my boat which uses channels to send speed, heading, location, and other data from a gps module to the front end. take a look and maybe it will inspire you

once you’re at the “Waiting for fix…” stage it should be connected correctly so i’m going to guess you’re not getting a good line of sight to the satellite. in the ‘’’data.py’’’ file on my project here you can see how i instantiate it and read the data. this is for python though so i imagine it’s slightly different for circuitpython.

put your command in /etc/rc.local and it will run at reboot. i actually use it to start Django’s http development server on my marine navigation project BoatBuddy

map on the front end to me screams javascript. check out mapbox (or alternative open source fork of mapbox Maplibre). i use it for my marine app: https://github.com/arm358/BoatBuddy
