Hi floodfx, we should chat at some point if you're on slack/discord/etc. I'm building something extremely similar and there's potential opportunity to share some code/learnings. Personally I feel this design paradigm is the real web 3.0.

My project is https://diffhtml.org/ and I have started experimenting with middleware to bridge to server and client workers: https://github.com/tbranyen/diffhtml/pull/251. For the server worker, it uses a WebSocket to ferry the VDOM diff patches, custom events, and property access/function calls. A big goal is to allow synchronous "main thread" access from workers, including on the server-side. This would allow you to write your UI code as if you were a client side app. It does this the same way as partytown using a SharedArrayBuffer and Atomics. I've also toyed around with hot reloading components without the need for a pre-processor like Babel, and the results are hugely promising. Stateful live UI updates from saving a component file to seeing in the browser without all the fuss with complex build steps is liberating.

I suggested one such idea (a diffing version of innerHTML) years ago to Mozilla. Ironically, the React team was against it and it fizzled out. In more ironic twists of events, someone eventually wrote a JS implementation of it: https://github.com/tbranyen/diffhtml/tree/master/packages/di... and nowadays people are talking about HTML-based rendering engines again, making this idea somewhat relevant once more.

To be fair to standards bodies, they have done some work. Element.append now exists to make hyperscripts a bit more straightforward, and a lot of reactivity semantics can be implemented on top of Proxy.

It has a decent compatibility with both Jest and Vitest's APIs (you can track progress here so you can use it as almost a drop-in replacement for either. Just as Node's, it has describe/it, mock, test and others, but with the expect syntax (which I find more readable). For example:

At Node Conference 2023, Jarred Sumner (creator of Bun) showed a demo of server components in Bun, so there is at least partial support in that ecosystem. Looks like it, it seems the 2% are mostly odd platform specific issues that the authors' did not deem very important (my assumption for the release happening anyway). AFAIK this[1] PR tries to fix them.

Bun has a solution for it. First of all, it already has a list of trusted dependencies. For them, Bun will execute all necessary scripts by default. Otherwise, you can add it to trustedDependecies in your package.json file. In Bun community usage of trustedDependencies is a hot topic. There are several suggestions on how to improve it.

I think maybe I was unclear. I'm talking about writing libraries that abstract across these differences and provide a single API, as sibling describes. I already know it's possible. I made a simple filesystem abstraction here[0] and a very simple HTTP library that uses it here[1]. They both work in Node/Deno and the browser. Unfortunately I ran into issues with Bun's slice implementation[2]. But I suspect there's a much better way of detecting and using the different backends.
