Tracking Weather Balloons with SDR
Cool stuff. I've watch them launch balloons near Oakland Airport. It's automated now. I've tracked the balloons using https://github.com/projecthorus/radiosonde_auto_rx and recovered the transmitter ( https://github.com/bazjo/RS41_Hardware ). It has an ARM chip, GPS rx & VHF tx. You can reflash the firmware : https://github.com/df8oe/RS41HUP . There's a guy in SF with a blog : http://rfhead.net

Most Microcontrollers are sold out , how are you managing ?
I just pick them up when they fall from the sky. I picked up an stm32f100 in Berkeley yesterday ...
What are some alternatives?
When comparing RS41HUP and radiosonde_hardware you can also consider the following projects:
radiosonde_auto_rx - Automatically Track Radiosonde Launches using RTLSDR
RS41ng - Custom firmware for Vaisala RS41 and Graw DFM-17 radiosondes with support for amateur radio use. Ideal for tracking high-altitude balloons. Supported modes include APRS, Horus 4FSK mode, CATS, morse code (CW) and additional digital modes like WSPR and FT8 via Si5351.
