How is D2 classic (pre-LoD) to play at this point?
Either you go the D2R Route (very different from d2 1.0). Or you install something like https://github.com/fearedbliss/Cactus for easy switching of versions on D2.

You can try out Cactus, which helps to switch to different patch version, including 1.00

Ported a save from 1.05b to D2R. Old items are strange
Also, if you are not using it yet, Cactus is a great and easy to use tool to setup a multi-version Diablo II installation. Allows you to easily switch between a whole bunch of versions.

Any fans of playing old versions? A collection of some LOD 1.07 gear.
No problem, I used to use D2SE for 1.07 as well at first. It was alright but after finding Cactus there was no going back. I'd also suggest getting Singling as well.
What are some alternatives?
