How does JSBsim compare to ED's FDM?
If you truly want to understand the basis of which FM's in DCS is modeled then I suggest starting by getting to grips with EFM examples such as the A-4E https://github.com/heclak/community-a4e-c/tree/master/A-4E-C

Getting into DCS
That said, you could get going for zero dollars. Use your existing cheap joystick and pick up the awesome, free A-4E-C mod, which is an excellent Cold War jet. It'll be a lot more fun with all the expensive stuff I just mentioned, but you could begin tonight, for free, with a bit of downloading.

A-4E-C is the gold standard. The A-29B and T-45 (unarmed, but good for carrier ops with two seater capability) are also pretty good as well.
