I'm using rke to generate a Kubernetes cluster in a private cloud. It produces a kube_config_cluster.yml file. Is there a way to add this config to my $HOME/.kube/config file?

For the case of RKE, which I mentioned, I think they do it to have the cluster config available, but no idea why they use a configmap rather than a secret (https://github.com/rancher/rke/issues/1024 is the relevant issue)

Correct approach to finding rke version?
In order to start working with them (and eventually upgrading), my plan is to grab the rke version that matches the node version, which appears to be this: https://github.com/rancher/rke/releases/tag/v1.0.0
