Looking for a software allowing friends and family to easily upload their pictures to me
I had somewhat of the same issue, and ended up using chevereto free. It has a very customizable web interface and supports user accounts. It saves pictures with thumbnails so you have to do some deleting when you want to take them elsewhere, but otherwise it works really well! Here is the link to the repo. Found this thread asking somewhat of the same question here

The most important point everyone is ignoring when considering a photo management app, longevity.
When you mention Chevereto I think that you meant the Chevereto-Free software (as you list only Open/Free Software in the comparison). That one has +2K stars :) and the repo you linked is for our container bootstrap dev standar (V3, V4) for our paid software. Chevereto-Free got Docker support recently, the package is here: https://github.com/rodber/chevereto-free/pkgs/container/chevereto-free

It really is hard to leave Gmail when all of your data has been conveniently stored therein. This is one of Google's retention strategies and it is indeed brilliant.
That said, there's a vast number of self-hosted alternatives like Stalwart Mail (email) [1], Immich (images) [2], NextCloud (Google Docs) [3], etc.

Good open source self-hostable alternatives exist! https://nextcloud.com/ (no affiliation, just a longtime happy user) is great for file sharing and even collaborative online document editing.
If you do not want to host your own instance, there are many great providers who will host one for you at a low cost.
