canboat
CAN Boat provides NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 utilities. It contains a NMEA 2000 PGN decoder and can read and write N2K messages. It is not meant as an end-user tool but as a discovery mechanism for delving into NMEA 2000 networks. (by canboat)

The number of mentions indicates the total number of mentions that we've tracked plus the number of user suggested alternatives.
Stars - the number of stars that a project has on GitHub. Growth - month over month growth in stars.
Activity is a relative number indicating how actively a project is being developed. Recent commits have higher weight than older ones.
For example, an activity of 9.0 indicates that a project is amongst the top 10% of the most actively developed projects that we are tracking.

Sailing Nerds: I need to learn about boat electronics...
Start with NMEA protocol specification documents. NMEA2000 physical layer is just CAN, really. There's an open source project already started to dissect the packets here: https://github.com/canboat/canboat/ . The wiki for that project https://github.com/canboat/canboat/wiki might help with getting started.

Introductory projects to learn electronics in embedded circuits
If you want to know what all is going on with the hardware, I HIGHLY recommend auditing nand2tetris on coursera. Fantastic course. For projects, build something you want to work on. For me it was automating my window blinds to open at sunrise and close at sunset. shameless plug

[Pico Project] Automated window blinds that open at sunrise and close at sunset
I built this project because I wanted to gradually wake up to the sunrise, but also needed a dark room to fall asleep in. If only there was a way to automatically have my blinds open at sunrise... enter blindr!
