Beeper Acquired by Automattic (WordPress)
If you've followed Beeper, you know that roughly 50% of our product is already open source (https://github.com/beeper). You can run your own Matrix server and use our bridges, or self-host the bridges and use Beeper clients (https://github.com/beeper/bridge-manager). For all intents and purposes, Beeper _is_ the rejuvenated and very open Pidgin.
Automattic is a fantastic home for us. We needed a home (or new investors) to keep working on Beeper.

Beeper Mini - AMA with Beeper Team
To enable client-side bridging (and e2ee), each Beeper client will need to run the bridges locally. If you prefer, you could always self-host https://github.com/beeper/bridge-manager and continue to use 3rd party Matrix clients. the Beeper homeserver is not going away!

Self-host and Multiple Users
If you self host synapse you can’t use the beeper apps but you could use the bridges we use and have multiple users. the better option is to use beepers matrix server and use https://github.com/beeper/bridge-manager to host your own bridges. You can refer your wife to have her skip the waitlist and do the same thing

Beeper client self-hosted?
https://github.com/beeper/bridge-manager is where you start. This sets up the Beeper side and gives you a config file for the bridge software (which you download separately).

Beeper CEO AMA - May 26, 2023 @ noon PDT
Yup! You can do this already today. You can self-host any bridge (https://github.com/beeper) and connect it to your Beeper account (https://github.com/beeper/bridge-manager). It’s not easy but it works.
