Apparel/clothing is indeed a great choice for practical application, and also viable academically. There has been numbers of research in this field to lay the foundation for your intended application. A viable starter project can be image search system that is similar to Google Lens, but more specialized for clothes for example (can be done in ~2 months). More ambitious project can be Virtual wardrobe (dubbed Virtual Try-on, or VITON by research community), or an additional feature of the above image search system that recommends accesories that can go with certain outfit. You can refer to this fashionAI awesome list for a starting point.
