Stars - the number of stars that a project has on GitHub. Growth - month over month growth in stars.
Activity is a relative number indicating how actively a project is being developed. Recent commits have higher weight than older ones.
For example, an activity of 9.0 indicates that a project is amongst the top 10% of the most actively developed projects that we are tracking.

Apart from payments and privacy, can you provide some legitimate crypto use-cases? Namely, smart contract platforms, AKA "web 3.0" - What genuine use-cases do these layer 1 chains provide or will provide in the future?
I’ve used Akash, where you can deploy any Docker Image to be run. This means that it’s possible to run your own containers such as custom backends, but also that you can find public examples such as Minecraft Servers and miners. See more examples here.

Daily General Discussion - September 5, 2022 (GMT+0)
On Akash, you can rent servers from a P2P marketplace to host, for example, a Minecraft Server, your own dockerized project (e.g. a NodeJS project) or one of dozens free-to-use useful examples. Look into other utility tokens too for storage, VPN, networking, smart contracts, and more.

The silence here shows that many are in it for the fiat
Your testing is wrong, as you missed out on Sia/Skynet which makes file storage cheap, reliable, and easy. In fact almost all rented computer resources also exist in crypto. Akash for cloud compute / hosting any Docker Image, Sentinel for VPN, plus a dozen similar projects with their own ideas. This makes you able to, for example, rent Minecraft Servers or your own d-app on a decentralized market, rent storage that is sustainable for all parties at $2/TB/mo, or VPN with more and less biased nodes than .

Not your keys, not your crypto? I don't care!
Everything will be finance related, but not everything is trading related. For example, renting Minecraft servers on Akash may be something you can relate to without having to see your crypto as this speculative investment.

Are we limited to Solidity for smart contracts / dapps?
Akash can work with almost any custom Docker image, which means that you can make your own Web2-native projects run on decentralized infrastructure. Here's a NodeJS tutorial / example, here's a Minecraft Server example, and here are some public finished deployment files anyone can use. This makes for very flexible dApps, but due to how the network works, applications are only online for as long as the developer / user wants it to, it's not permanent like many smart contracts are.

Converting docker-compose files
If you want to give it a shot, join the Discord and I can try to assist. Otherwise, you can try to see if the SoftEther VPN on Akash is a viable alternative :)

Is there any real-world usage of blockchain tech?
As developers, they should know better. Any developer can make use of Akash, a decentralized marketplace where you can rent deployments (VPS alternative) and pay-as-you-go. I've used it for things like Discord bots & website backends. For more, you can see a comprehensive list of public projects here.

Are alternative layer 1 slowly going to disappear?
Also, all these other alt L1 networks have barely any usage, look at the fee volume https://cryptofees.info/ this means these networks pay for their security via creating and issuing new coin. This means everyones holdings get diluted and worth less (Inflation).
