Is there a recommended alternative to getopts?
Yeah, now that I look at it a bit closer, it is quirky. Not unmanageable, but I think I prefer something like Argparse which generates the parsing code for you using a simpler language.

I wrote an MVP testing library in Bash to make it as easy as possible to add test suites for commandline-driven tools
Good stuff. I like the syntax more than BATS.

Super lightweight approach to unit testing in Bash
There is already a good, recognised testing framework for Bash.
What are some alternatives?
bash-argsparse - An high level argument parsing library for bash
testkube - ☸️ Kubernetes-native Test Execution and Orchestration framework. It runs all types of tests, including Load Testing, End To End Testing, Front End, API Testing, etc... Integrates directly with you testing stack (K6, Postman, Playwright, Cypress,..)
getoptions - An elegant option/argument parser for shell scripts (full support for bash and all POSIX shells)
goss - Quick and Easy server testing/validation
docopts - Shell interpreter for docopt, the command-line interface description language.
ShellCheck - ShellCheck, a static analysis tool for shell scripts
modernish - Modernish is a library for writing robust, portable, readable, and powerful programs for POSIX-based shells and utilities.
e2e-framework - A Go framework for end-to-end testing of components running in Kubernetes clusters.
oil - Oils is our upgrade path from bash to a better language and runtime. It's also for Python and JavaScript users who avoid shell!
testy - test helpers for more meaningful, readable, and fluent tests
argparse-bash - Use python's argparse module in shell scripts
k-bench - Workload Benchmark for Kubernetes
