It is possible, and a few years ago seemed quite a trend (just going by /r/homeassistant spectating) - https://github.com/hassio-addons/addon-node-red - but I gather HA's own automation scripting has at least visualisation if not GUI programming now.

Automation to run whenever the temperature becomes hotter outside than inside, and vice versa?
If you have basic programming skills, adding NodeRED on top of homebridge (via the NodeRED addon, node-red-contrib-homebridge-automation) will give you a lot more automation power and flexibility (and it'll probably be more reliable than Apple's Home automation). The only catch is that all devices being controlled/monitored have to be accessed via homebridge -- devices connected directly to homekit are inaccessible. (Of course, the opposite isn't true. Homekit can access all homekit-only and homebridge devices.)
