A cloud server accessible via SSH: If you don’t already have a cloud server, you can get one from popular providers like AWS, DigitalOcean, and Google Cloud. Ensure the server has at least 4GB of RAM, and a minimum of 20GB SSD

If serverless functions are not your choice, you can just keep it as an actual tiny node (or anything else) server and deploy it to any cloud platform, from AWS to Azure to Digital Ocean to [insert your favorite hosting provider].

Want more control, better performance, and scalability? These are for you: DigitalOcean – Affordable ($4–5/month) but requires server setup. AWS – Free EC2 tier available, but can feel like learning rocket science. Linode – My go-to! Easy to set up, powerful, and beginner-friendly. Heads-up: These require some server knowledge. If commands like sudo apt-get update make you nervous, stick to managed platforms like Render.

This guide describes how to deploy a static website to a $4 Droplet at DigitalOcean. We will be using Nginx to serve our website and Certbot to manage TLS certificates issued by Let's Encrypt. Finally, we setup GitHub Actions to automate the deployment of the website.

When it comes to hosting an API, there are plenty of options available. For this particular API, we’ll use Render.

We will need a real database to apply migrations and store our data. You can install Postgres on your machine or use a Cloud Platform like Neon, Render, etc.

Render is a more traditional hosting platform that can build and deploy your applications, websites, and databases. As a unified platform, Render is an awesome choice for both seasoned developers and beginners, as you do not have to worry about using multiple platforms to host your application and your database(s). It can run various projects, from static sites and web applications to background workers, APIs, cron jobs, and managed databases.

I then containerized the backend python code using Docker and deploy it on render.com because of how fast and easy it is. I also build everything for WebGL for the last time, upload it on itch.io, and a huge sense of accomplishment when I can actually play against my own bot!

Render is a managed PaaS for apps, including Docker, with auto-deploys, autoscaling, DDoS protection, and compliance (GDPR, SOC 2). Free tier for sites, APIs, databases, but gets pricey quick.

For deployment, I used Render—a cloud hosting platform perfect for deploying web applications effortlessly.
