WhichSpace VS Rectangle

WhichSpace (Free) WhichSpace is a free open-source space checker, have you ever forgotten which space is currently active on macOS (10.11+) and wanted a quick way to tell? Didn't think so... but I did!

WhichSpace, the original idea

I'm running macOS 12 and I'm looking for something very specifiek. What I'm looking for is a way to get the current open applications of a space/desktop to show up in my menu bar. Why? I use Amethyst (A tiling window manager for macOS) in my daily flow. Sometimes I have 3 apps running on a single space in 'fullscreen' mode meaning that they cover each other. This results in a lot of switching and searching for certain open apps. In other tiling window managers this is handled by an indicator in the menu (showing the open windows of that space). I currently use WhichSpace to show my space ID and Context as a workaround for this issue to show te open apps on a space. For example, on this space I have a finder windows and a firefox window running:

Rectangle’s installation is incredibly straightforward. Its immediate out-of-the-box functionality was a pleasant surprise. For anyone seeking to reduce the friction of window management on their Mac, Rectangle is a solution I wholeheartedly recommend.

Tip: I use Rectangle app to set up keyboard shortcuts to resize windows (I only have three shortcuts there: left/right half of the screen and full screen).

But Raycast also has some functionality in that direction.

I suggest using Rectangle instead of Magnet; it has the same features but is free. I don't know what other Windows features you want to have.

I was a Spectacle user for years, but I recently switched to using Rectangle for window management. Rectangle has a few more options than Spectacle; I’m still getting used to it but I have no strong feelings either way.
