What functionality is lost by not having the battery replaced on Pokémon emerald? The save is still there.
Starting a new file is unnecessary if you have an r4 flash cart and a ds or ds lite (one with a gba slot). You can use https://github.com/megaboyexe/GBA_RTCRead to set the cartridges real time clock (RTC) to the current time and date. Here’s a video with more info: https://youtu.be/jzauCmOvF_U
