Tips on jailbreaking the SteamDeck
Even the creator of SteamDeckPersistentRootFs said it's a bad idea and he's run into issues forcing config changes to persist between updates.

Steam Deck Desktop Workarounds (permanent full access)
This scares me. If I got this right it leads to the same problems described here: https://github.com/Chloe-ko/SteamDeckPersistentRootFs Which are inconsistencies with old versions in the overlay and new versions of the newest firmware image.

my return to gaming mode has disappeared from my desktop. Does anyone know how to get it back?
Legit, if you want to get a little more involved with linux you can play with the persistent rootfs trick. https://github.com/Chloe-ko/SteamDeckPersistentRootFs What this will do, is allow you to actually install things from the arch command line installer and have it stay between updates. If you want a graphical installer for the arch install manager tkpacman is a nice lightweight one; and is what I'm using now.

Always used Fedora/Ubuntu Linux in the past, but after I get my Steam Deck
lol. Also! If you want to take advantage of the linux core I recommend this trick for a persistent FSRoot https://github.com/Chloe-ko/SteamDeckPersistentRootFs

How to get around the deck wiping out all non flatpack software?
GOG games for Linux, and those you install via Lutris should be fine by default. That being said if you want to install software from the official Arch repositories or the AUR, I would suggest using something like https://github.com/Chloe-ko/SteamDeckPersistentRootFs to provide an overlay for you to install your software into.

Technically the steam deck is the only modern console to be immune to jailbreaking
Yes but it is completely overwritten each OS update. I worked around that with Overlay + a few other modifications to allow reboot to non-overlay OS and restore overlay after update.

Other Linux OS(es) and booting from external drives.

Any advice on how to install Pamac, AUR helpers and/or missing headers?
Not made by me works great so far https://github.com/Chloe-ko/SteamDeckPersistentRootFs

Installing other distros and driver support on Steam Deck?
I ran endeavour OS for a week on it all worked except the sound on the steamdeck, worked trough HDMI but I could not find a sound device onboard of the steamdeck. Had some problems with network but I will say probably to do with my USB c hubs. In the end I went with https://github.com/Chloe-ko/SteamDeckPersistentRootFs for my use case it is just easier then dual booting. Made some simple scripts that I can execute as games in steamos to select if I want BSPWM/Gnome and then click go to desktop and all works.

Why more PC gaming handhelds should ditch Windows for SteamOS
I really want one of these overpowered handhelds so I can run https://jovian-experiments.github.io/Jovian-NixOS/ as a semi-portable daily driver

Nix + home-manager on Steam Deck
Neat! Personally I went the extra mile and went with NixOS + Jovian-NixOS (to get the Deck's steam-session) on mine. It still requires a couple of workarounds for broken functionality (like SD cards not automounting due to the FHS container, fixed by using a udev rule + replacement script to notify Steam) but otherwise works like a charm!
