How Do You Replace Sprites?
You would want to use Content Patcher for it. You can use Edit Image for it.
-
guides for specific kinds of mod creation?
Content Patcher actually comes with a full guide on what its features do, and I believe it includes a section that lets you only make a change when it’s a certain season. Take a look through it if you haven’t already, and I can (hopefully) answer any questions you might have!

Is anyone here familiar with modding?
It's pretty easy to replace sprites using Content Patcher. You don't need a powerful computer, you can do the whole thing in a text editor. Check out the section on "EditImage" here. Follow the instructions here to, among other things, find out how to unpack the game assets so you can find out the filename of Krobus's sprite sheet and the XY coordinates where you will want to replace with your sprites.

stubborn portrait issue
I think you also need to add HD Portraits as a dependency in the manifest for your mod. Also, if you're new to making content packs like this, I recommend reading this guide: https://github.com/Pathoschild/StardewMods/blob/develop/ContentPatcher/docs/author-guide.md

Trying to figure out how to create a full game recolor and struggling, help!
I am attempting the same thing, and found that following both this and this helped start out (the cp wiki page, and the github tutorial on cp). If you are struggling with creating the file, you can have a look at my mod and feel free to use it as a base, if you keep any assests etc just give credit in the description.

an idea for friendship based gift changes?
And Content Patcher's v2.8.0 release added the RemoveDelimited text operation, which ought to make mods for finetuning gift lists hassle-free regarding compatibility (since ones written under previous versions of CP could either add to or completely overwrite the lists, which meant the load order of active mod folders + mod dependencies + preferences defined for new items added by the frameworks JSON Assets or Dynamic Game Assets ultimately determined which particular gifting setup would take priority).

Creating portraits on Mac
You could just download other portrait mods to use them as a template. Replacing a portrait or sprites is quite easy, as you simply need to create a content patcher mod with EditImage commands.

How to get into mod development?
And for sprite changes etc the content patcher readme was helpful to me

Trouble doing portrait mod coding, pls help meTT
Hi! I'm trying to make a portrait mod for stardew valley but I can't figure out how to properly format the art files. I'm not a modder at all...I'm just a artist. so far i've only drawn abigail's, so i thought id use her as a tester. I used DCBurger's mod files as reference for how big I thought to make it, because my art is more detailed and needs a bigger size, but it still ended up too big. They used a 512 x 1280 pixel size png for all of abigail's portraits, so I used the same size, but it only shows a corner of the art I want to show up. I thought maybe it was the dpi so I switched it from 300 to 72 and that did nothing... I looked through their content.json file because I read that that is where you apply the changes and there was no lines on reformatting the image size, and when I tried to code it myself the file didn't work at all. for reference I used this guide. maybe i did it wrong? Or i missed something? but yeah so I'm really confused on how they used a bigger file and still had it work. If anyone here is familiar with modding stardew and could help me I'd appreciate it so so SO much!! I've gone through so many failure trials TuT

guides for specific kinds of mod creation?
For furniture, Alternative Textures has very detailed guides and this mod has recolored almost every piece of furniture, so it's a great starting point since you won't have to worry about stuff like furniture size, you can just edit what you need.
