There are a lot of excellent mockups floating around. A lot of them date back to the time when most designers in the circle were still hanging around on DeviantArt. Indeed, elementary OS itself has its roots in that milieu. One particularly notable example is the presentation app, Spice-up, which implements this 2013 mockup.

    > They also made some mockups of what a redesign might look like, but as you might imagine it would also be quite a lot of work to implement it: https://github.com/glimpse-editor/glimpse-nx-design

One problem with those designs is that cramming the entire GIMP's menu into the hamburger menu on top right is likely to cause more problems than it solves.

This stuff sort of works in applications with a limited feature set, such as Akira UX. I don't think it can work well for GIMP.

It's possible to find a hybrid approach, but so far, I've only seen Siril doing that, and I'm not convinced.

Glimpse appears to be dead. The project got some hate, but I really liked where their proposed design was heading.

Another example is Glimpse. Lots of mockups for Glimpse NG, but the whole project is on hiatus now. Is it on hiatus because GNOME HIG sucks? No. They just don't have enough developers.

Right now it's a rebranded clone, but they are working on a redesign with Glimpse NX: https://github.com/glimpse-editor/glimpse-nx-design
