On Windows, you can use scoop
Who else is forced to use Windows and how do you work around it?

This is not directly to you but everyone should also be aware of scoop which is similar to Chocolatey but without a paid tier and more aimed at command-line tools. Directly comparable to apt or brew.

For a good PowerShell experience I use https://starship.rs/ which includes git info. I use the new windows terminal with the font/colors/etc set just so. For a package manager I like using https://scoop.sh/ and for anything missing there chocolatey usually has it. Good luck, there's more good stuff out there but it's hard to find.

However, there is no official API or nice, clean way of updating the environment variables of a running process. Chocolatey uses this script and you can copy that and use it too, but while this will work in 90+% of cases it isn't a perfect replication of the environment that a new PowerShell process would get. The "cleanest" way is to either just use a new PowerShell process (that isn't a child of your old one) or to use a package manager that doesn't rely on programs continuously appending their own entries to PATH, but rather uses just a single directory and puts shims to all installed programs in there - such as scoop instead of winget. Then you won't have this problem at all.

Scoop is way better, and has been around much longer. Chocolatey is the big one, but I prefer Scoop since it installs to your home directory so it never needs admin elevation.
