  • Question with switching ground with npn transistor
    1 project | /r/AskElectronics | 2 Feb 2022
Hey, I was trying to switch a ground wire on a usb cable on and off and I saw a diagram where they use an npn transistor, but they connected the base and emitter to the same ground with a 1k resistor on each and the collector is conected to the other side of the usb ground to close the circuit. Heres the image https://github.com/stooged/PS4-Server-900u/blob/main/Images/diag2.jpg I dont really know why, from the little I know it should only connect the emitter to ground and leave the base for the switching. It seems that it works so what am I not understanding here? Thanks for the help, searched on using a npn to switch ground, but couldnt find anything like this.

Alright, it took all day but I finally got it all working properly. So a HUGE thanks and credit to stooged for PS4-Server-900u which allows us to trigger the exploit using a Wemos D1 Mini, serving the exploit and turning on/off the usb flash drive using some code and a transistor or relay. Using a separate Arduino I put together a program that sends out the appropriate (and precisely timed) infrared commands to initiate the exploit. This works using the HDMI-CEC protocol, which unfortunately not all tv's will support. I might be able to get the exploit time down (is a 10 second delay in the script), but the infrared is as fast as I can get it.
