You should look into xstation or OPL, if for no other reason than to be able to disable hardware dithering.

Hardware dithering can be disabled.

You should see Silent Hill over HDMI with the dithering disabled. Instead of the fog being grey, it has this fucked up looking rainbow effect. It's pretty hilarious.

I've got the opposite problem: xStation + dithering disabled + PS1Digital + mClassic + 4k Gamer Pro = beautiful 4k HDMI output from my ps1 and I'm looking into possibly spending ~$3000 on a 4k ultra short throw projector.

PS1 (240p) -> PS1Digital (720p) -> mClassic (1440p + anti-aliasing) -> 4k Gamer Pro (4k) -> HDMI-out to my 4k flatscreen. Also disabled the dithering so the games look even better.

Especially once you disable the dithering which gives the fog this super appealing rainbow look!

If you're playing on an xStation, you can disable the hardware dithering and the game will look a lot better.

PS1Digital is a hardware mod for the original PS1 that bypasses the on-board video DAC and outputs the unprocessed digital video signal over HDMI at 1080p. I have one that feeds into an mClassic which upscales the 1080p to 1440p while applying a very high quality anti-aliasing filter. I also disabled hardware dithering on all my games to make them look even better in 4k.

MechaPwn can make your PS2 region-free via softmodding. More people should know about it. It doesn't work on the launch model PS2 though.

Mechapwn does exactly that but without needing a modchip.

These days it's best not to use a mod chip as there are better methods available, one such method is mechapwn which patches disc protections in software, it has a few limitations that mod chips don't have such as requiring the discs to be Master patched (if not using Force unlock) or if you enable force unlock you won't be able to use CDs or PS1 games.

You can but there's a missing step. Certain model PS2s can make use of something called MechaPwn. However, in order to run MechaPwn (which is homebrew), you would need a way to run homebrew -- which is what Free MC Boot or Free DVD Boot is for.

The Japanese PS2 has both English and Japanese options available in the OSD by default. On versions later than Deckard slims you can change the OSD Region with Mechapwn and unlock other region specific languages.
