I either do not have this issue, or it doesn't show up for me on the battery usage page. Are you sure it is widespread?
With that said, there is some work being done towards a FLOSS replacement for firebase [1]. Gotify can be used as a backend [2], among others ([3] too, I think). Not ready for prime-time, but almost, and development started pretty recently (mid-December).

Google is about to make life more difficult for custom ROM fans
Check out Simple SMS Messenger[1], been using it since Signal dropped SMS support.

Recovering from saved sqlite database
I accidentally my whole phone. I do have a Titanium Backup of Simple SMS Messenger, from which I can extract the conversations.db. However, when I launch the app, it replaces the conversations. I do not have an export. I would like a method of merging / importing the old conversations from the database. I'm techy and can write SQL, Python, etc. I've had a quick look at the exporter to see if I can replicate the JSON format of the exported conversations. But I thought I might ask in case anyone here has already solved this or has better advice. Cheers!

Finally ditched almost all proprietary apps and hosted my own home server for media streaming and files/photo sharing. (Still using WhatsApp, Classroom and some food ordering apps though)

Signal Replacement
I wasn't impressed with Simple SMS, the devs are a bit slow to fix issues such as the one i reported.

Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon)
I take about sms app...QKSMS (https://github.com/moezbhatti/qksms) seems dead...But there is an active fork, PartisanSMS (https://github.com/wrwrabbit/Partisan-SMS), cons : it's not on f-droid...Simple SMS (https://github.com/SimpleMobileTools/Simple-SMS-Messenger/) not a huge fan of Simple apps... but on f-droid.Sad about all of this... It was a pro to migrate some people...
