A guide to setting up a cloud server network
- What server software or framework to use. Ideally, if you dont need too much vanilla features (world generation, all mobs & items implemented, etc), I'd use something lightweight that is not based off of the vanilla server software. There are a few projects like this on github, including: https://github.com/Minestom/Minestom , https://github.com/feather-rs/feather , https://github.com/KryptonMC/Krypton , https://github.com/df-mc/dragonfly (bedrock). Which one you use will probably depend mostly on your preference. - You will need a way to store data separate from the servers. A database like postgres should work. There are a lot of different databases tho!

Jukebox - A Minecraft server that supports plugins written in Go (call for help).
For the past months (on and off) I have been working on a project that I call Jukebox. It is an extension of the Minecraft server software known as Dragonfly (written in Go) that supports plugins/mods written in Go.

Convert SimCity 2000 cities into Minecraft worlds
There is Minetest, which has at least one configuration that attempts to mimic vanilla Minecraft, but I'm not certain how accurate it is.
The stored data structures are well understood for both versions. See for example https://www.amuletmc.com/ (Editor, Python) or https://github.com/df-mc/dragonfly/tree/master/server/world/... (Code, Go)

Is hosting an smp through a 2gb phone viable?
You can try it. You'll need Termux (a linux terminal emulator running inside android). Then you have to install go (pkg install golang) and git (pkg install git) and dragonfly (https://github.com/df-mc/dragonfly) (a faster third party server software) and it should work, although this is a theoretical solution. Termux continues running in the background and you might even be able to put the phone to sleep whilst keeping the server running.
What are some alternatives?

mcstatusgo - A Minecraft service status checker written in Go
