My grandpa is a huge HAM radio fan, so I showed him GNU Radio. Got this text the day he got back home.
If you are looking for a great gift idea get him a RaspberryPi and a SDR (Software defined radio) dongle and put HamPi on it. That sucker has every radio related program you could think to want. https://github.com/dslotter/HamPi/wiki
- Happy sad post 😁☹

One of two RPis for my portable HF rigs. Both have an RTC and GPS. Both generate wifi networks if they don't see one they know. Both have servers that host documentation for all offgrid equipment, batteries, antennas, etc. It's operated with a tablet, phone, or laptop.
HamPi is a license violation. It installs BOINC and steals your CPU cycles. Do not use. Reference: https://github.com/dslotter/HamPi/commit/7b460fa8261413501ef3d7af47d80b41379cd730

Ever wanted a push notification whenever there's an APRS beacon near your house? I wrote an app for that. (more details in comments)
This uses the aprs-parser npm module which I contributed to a few years ago.. I recently submitted a few more PRs to support weather & new APRS radio identification... Until those PRs are merged, you can get the new radio support by installing my fork... after running npm install to get all other dependencies, you can run npm install git+https://github.com/klinquist/npm-aprs-parser#new-radio-support.
What are some alternatives?
