I feel like I own my pc
I’ve never actually used ubuntu or debian based distros, to be honest! Linux mint is ubuntu-based, and generally recommended for beginners, but you might want to ask around a little more and find out what suits your workflow. on ubuntu, synaptics would be called ‘xserver-xorg-input-synaptics’, and mtrack is ‘xserver-xorg-input-mtrack’. however, mtrack hasn’t really been updated in ages, but there’s this fork that I used, that’s more recent. try installing one with sudo apt install, or build the one linked. Something that tripped me up when I first tried switching from libinput is that though I had installed it, libinput was still being loaded. In /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d or /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, you should see a few files. Change the number of whatever driver you want to load to be lower than the alternatives. So, if synaptics was labelled with a 50, and libinput a 40, you would have to change the synpatics number to 30 or smth to have it be loaded on your next reboot. this only matters for drivers that do the same thing- so here you only have to worry about the numbers on mtrack, synpatics, and libinput. Try all the alternatives out and see if there’s any improvement!
