What i found to be semi-reliable is something like room-assistant or ESPresense - however, you need to have some kind of Bluetooth device/wearable on you to be able to really get room-level reliability...

Web.esphome.io says "failed to execute 'open' on 'SerialPort': Failed to open serial port.
esphome flasher It was forked from a project called node-mcu flasher, which would also work.

Does the bootloader need to be flashed on the chip before flashing WLED? I'm seeing conflicting info.

New to this, can't figure out how to flash
with what are you trying to flash the bin file with? Software wise on your computer? You can try esp flasher if the bin is already compiled see releases
