Chart.js VS vega

ChartsJS for inspiring me with the pie chart.

Most of frontend libraries are made with Vanilla JS. An example of library that you might frequently use is "Chart.js". But React is not compatible with Chart.js so here it comes "React-chartjs-2" A wrapper library to work with Chart.js in React ecosystem. Oh you want to use "three.js" for some cool 3D? you will need "React-three/fiber". In my case, I need to implement "telegram-web-app", not so fast, I have to create my own wrapper to be able to use it.

Chart.js

Chart.js is a free, open-source JavaScript library for data visualization, which supports eight chart types: bar, line, area, pie, bubble, radar, polar and scatter. It's licensed under the permissive MIT license and is renowned for being flexible, lightweight, easy to use and extendible.

They are images so it could be any number of things, datawrapper, charts.js, d3.js to name a few options.

Connie Leung wrote a tutorial to demonstrate how these new hooks work, integrating an Angular app with the Chart.js library: "DOM reading and writing with new lifecycle hooks in Angular"

I used chart.js [0], but I don't necessarily endorse it - it's just what I knew how to use quickly. I usually try to keep my posts free from javascript, and could have used a different tool that gives me SVG data or images.

For those curious, the stack is a simple Django app with HTMX/Alpine and all of the charts are specified and rendered as Vega (https://vega.github.io/vega/). Lots of LLM function calling under the hood as well.

I recently added support for plotting XGBoost models using Vega (https://vega.github.io/vega/) into the XGBoost Elixir API (https://github.com/acalejos/exgboost).

Since EXGBoost supports loading trained models across different APIs, you can even train using the Python API and then plot using this Elixir API if you prefer.

The Data Source is from devjobsscanner (I am basically the owner, so I have the data) an the tool used to make the chart is Vega

It’s based on Vega https://vega.github.io/vega/ which means it’s an already matured backend. Vega-lite is the Javascript package and Altair is the Python.

Eh, I have no reason to, and not much interest in PHP anymore. Things like Vega seem really cool.

This chart is make with Vega (and also all the charts from the article). Data source is from devjobsscanner and contains about 10 Million dev jobs offers, which only a small subset contain salary information thought.

Not that I'm working on it, but I'd love to see a vega stack in rust.
