Actually there is a pure CSS solution to doing this! Tho it requires adding an extra element or a JS polyfill for webkit devices - see here https://github.com/MarketingPipeline/CSS-Image-Loader

But you might like checking this out too https://github.com/MarketingPipeline/CSS-Image-Loader < ::before is not supported on web-kit but using some JS you can check if webkit and provide fallback support for it!
