How do you guys build a decent looking base?
Building Gadgets: this is by far the one of my most useful, versatile building tool created by DireWolf20. There are many tools in this mod and it it really intuitive to use once you understand it. You can build wall, floors, horizontal/vertical columns; copy structures and paste them somewhere else; exchange blocks and so much more. You simply have to have the blocks in your inventory or in a storage and set the gadgets to use the blocks from that storage

help with building gadgets
The wiki for building gadgets has a lot of info and there are plenty tutorial videos available on youtube showing how they work. Only thing that’s different in VH is the crafting recipes. U can always make a creative world to play around with it and test things.

Which mods are good for those still new to modded of Minecraft?
Magic? Botania is the easy answer here. Okay, okay, it’s not really a magic mod, but it’s in the theme of a magic mod. Still, it’s very vanilla-friendly, allowing you to automate everything in the mod with just vanilla mechanics if you so wish. It’s not hard to get into, and it has heaps of content to have fun with. If you want a “real” magic mod that is beginner-friendly, I’d check out Ars Nouveau, which is a really fun magic mod with powerful spells that doesn’t have a huge skill floor.
