AutoRaise VS material-shell

I'm not sure they appeal to the same group of users. macOS is IMNHO much worse than GNU/Linux with a proper window manager, much less comfortable to use with multiple desktops, and forces the use of a mouse/trackpad way too much.[1]

The m2 can run Linux - but external display support is probably a long way off.

So for the user wanting to run Linux - m2 isn't really viable - unless you actually work on it with just the built-in screen - for me that doesn't work ergonomically.

I have the m2 - it's not terrible - I suspect I'd prefer one of these.

There used to be third-party tools to enable focus-follows-mouse and universal clickthrough, but I'm not sure any still exist for recent OS versions. Seems like it should be possible though. Maybe AutoRaise can do what you want? Looks like you'd need to compile it yourself with custom flags though. See https://stackoverflow.com/questions/67258537/focus-follows-mouse-on-macos

*PS* I have already tried AutoRaise (https://github.com/sbmpost/AutoRaise). But, basically what it does is: Change FOCUS on mouse hover. That's NOT what I need.

People discussing this a long time ago (stackexchange) mention a project called AutoRaise. No idea if it still works.

On the mini, I was running AutoRaise. On the Macbook Air, I was running AutoFocus.

Install AutoRaise or something similar that allows you to focus on windows just by moving your cursor over them or hovering over them while holding a modifier key.

I really want https://material-shell.com/ for MacOS

it was perfect for using a single monitor

kinda like a deterministic alt+tab, you set up the layout of "workspaces" and they're always in the same place

I keep getting annoyed at alt+tab because I accidentally clicked on another window and now the order is messed up

I'm confused. How does that work? Is it like a GNOME extension or something; similar to how Material Shell works?

I don't know too much about that. You can achieve a lot with gnome extensions. And if you'd like to build your own and see what's possible, check out the source code of Material Shell

But you might want to try out Gnome first, with one of the many tiling extensions, or perhaps Material Shell for a Tiling like WM experience

Hi, I'm working on Ubuntu 22.04.1 with Gnome 42.5. I used to be able to install shell extensions just fine with the Chrome extension. However (I think since (un)installing the Material Shell Extension), I can't install any extension anymore, not via the Chrome extension, not via the terminal (`gnome-extensions install -f ...`). In the browser, the switch is available and clickable, but nothing simply happens. Via the terminal, no feedback at all is given. When going over the [source code](https://github.com/material-shell/material-shell) of the material shell, it seems that it tampers with some extensions and God knows what else... Via `dconf` I had to enable the allowance of extensions (`disable-user-extensions`), also something Material Shell probably did. I uninstalled Material Shell according to the docs, but of course, not everything is undone...
