edit: If I'm reading this code right, they use google drive (or similar) and write a file with the command, which the program picks up and runs... erm ... I guess that's one way to do it.

If you want an example of some terrible code look no further than the alexa sdk (https://github.com/alexa/avs-device-sdk). Its just badly designed.
