What's the best way to find car engine RPM with an arduino?
A simpler - and common - approach would be using a hall effect sensor; there's some references here - github.com/rtbaker/ArduinoTachometer and StackOverflow.

It might be easier to just do an EFI conversion from what I'm seeing in the comments here. Maybe ask on https://speeduino.com/ forum

My 89 YJ's getting a new hampster wheel.
If you want more info on Speeduino a google search helps but the main project is at https://speeduino.com/ I bought a 3rd party board called a NO2S that will play nice in a couple of different configurations with a 4cylinder Injected motor and a Distributor ignition. I am just in the process of soldering and getting the motor situated with a harness I can tie into. My plan is absolutely to document it and share what I find.

Speeduino can be a great reference for anything auto-related! It's an open source ECU so does quite a lot of cool stuff, including reading tachometer values. From what I gather it uses a MAX9926 "VR Conditioner"; and the codebase may be a bit scary if you're new to this stuff.
