Y Combinator Urges the White House to Support Europe's Digital Markets Act
That is listed under "unofficial sideloading methods". A more accurate title would've been "Does iOS support sideloading?" but I wanted to keep the domain name as short as possible :)
The Apple Developer program is not intended as an option for end users to enable sideloading on their device, even if that is a side effect of joining it. It is only intended to allow developers to briefly test their apps in a limited capacity before uploading them to the App Store. Apps "installed" this way expire after a certain length of time and you must ask Apple's cloud service for a new certificate each time that happens. You're still tied to Apple indefinitely this way.
Therefore, I lump it into the same category as jailbreaking -- yes, you can argue that the existence of that means iOS already has sideloading, but it's not officially supported.
Sidenote: You don't need to spend $100/yr if you want to go the "unofficial sideloading" route; AltStore (Classic) is available for free: https://altstore.io/

A first look at Europe's alternative iPhone app stores
AltServer from the AltStore folks allows you to automate the renewal of sideloaded apps. It’s not perfect, but it’s an excellent workaround.

More options for apps distributed in the European Union
That's probably to prevent the most obvious workaround of creating a new shell company for every million users. (Which would be not so ridiculous as it sounds, there is plenty of software you cannot buy directly but only through a reseller. Epic could become a pure b2b shop on paper and sell Fortnite clients to regional distributors, or something like that.)
Some time ago somebody made an alternative App Store for emulators, https://altstore.io . I think it works by having users get a developer's certificate and installing the apps like an in-development app. I think it would be really neat if this model got tested in court and declared completely legal.

Ask HN: Is it possible to build React Native for iOS without a Mac?
See: https://altstore.io/
2 apps, re-sign weekly maximum. 3 if you do it without AltStore. Unlimited with a $99/yr developer account.

Apple Announces Changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
you already could in a way... by using altstore[0] on non jailbroken devices... It's not as straightforward as on Android but it is possible (there were even some builds of blink engine)

Do I need to get out the soldering-iron again? (2018)
I mean, that's fine. My argument about adblockers applies to other software too: the Apple ecosystem has some of the basics (like sync, browsers, etc) figured out for me so that I don't need to fiddle with it. While I'd like to use Firefox, I don't need to, and the tradeoffs that come with accepting Safari instead are worth it for my specific situation. Forcing myself into a different ecosystem so that I can use different software that does the same thing isn't a good tradeoff for me. It sounds like that's not the case for you - glad you've found an ecosystem that works for you.
There are a couple of things you might want to be aware of though:
* AltStore exists and works pretty well: https://altstore.io
* iOS 17.2 allows users in some locales to side load apps: https://medium.com/@rmndrathna4/ios-17-2-sideload-apps-what-... . This was sparked by the Digital Markets Act, which could also force Apple to allow alternate browser engines. It went into effect May 2023, but I'm not a lawyer and idk how this will actually affect the Apple ecosystem. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Markets_Act

[Question] Is it possible to sideload apps on 16.4?
SideStore is basically AltStore. Especially if you look at the GitHub (https://github.com/SideStore/SideStore). It’s trusted. Well, I heard nothing bad about it, so I guess it is.

[Sideloaded] Guide installation SideStore (Windows uniquement).

Refresh error - There is no provisioning profile with the requested identifier on this team.
This solved it for me: https://github.com/SideStore/SideStore/issues/302 Scroll a bit down and you'll find Sidestore Fix.zip You have to install the SideStorePR311.ipa contained in the zip (once) using PC/Mac I did not delete sidestore from my phone before that, so it kept my account settings and anisette server.. Once you have sidestore, refresh it and then install your (2) Apps, again, without deleting them before.

Scarlet causing alot of battery drain
Just use AppDB it can do affectively the same thing. If you’re using it with the direct install/enterprise certificate. Or, you can use SideStore if you’re using it the computer method.
-
how to install sidestore (windows, macos, and linux)
download SideStore.ipa (https://github.com/SideStore/SideStore/releases/latest/download/SideStore.ipa) and sideload it using AltStore or Sideloadly. for linux users, you can use AltServer-Linux (https://github.com/NyaMisty/AltServer-Linux). just make sure to use a solution that uses your apple developer account.

Working instagram and twitter notifications with sideloadly or altstore and a developer account
Yeah, so I’m using SideStore and I was wondering a while back why SideStore would give me notifications but my other sideloaded apps through SideStore wouldn’t, and so I asked in their discord and they gave me this response. It’s really interesting, actually… and it’s probably why the same is happening for you…

Scarlet direct install vs computer?
Sense you have a Mac (luckyyyyy) it’s super easy for you to set it up, download and run this on your Mac, with you iPhone plugged in, and command+click on the icon and click direct side-load IPA, and choose this SideStore IPA. Download the WireGuard app on your iPhone, and import this tunnel (you must keep the VPN on to refresh.) Refresh SideStore, once before doing anything else in the app. And your done, you can sign and install apps now!
What are some alternatives?
TrollStore - Jailed iOS app that can install IPAs permanently with arbitary entitlements and root helpers because it trolls Apple
alt-anisette-server - Anisette Data as Service, like Sideloadly's, based on AltServer-Windows!
YTLitePlus - YouTube for iOS, supercharged with @dayanch96 YouTube Plus (ex. YTLite) and several other tweaks.
