Essentially yes, you can configure it that way. I'd struggle to explain exactly how easily, and the configuration required differs for each person. I'll just say to read my own configuration files and search for "tab." https://github.com/w0rp/vim/blob/master/autoload/startup/keybinds.vim

I thought I'd share these snippets of VimL from my personal script files for how I search projects with rg. I tried a number of plugins for searching in projects, and none of them quite did it just the way I wanted it, so I have the following in vimrc and in one of my autoload files. (I use autoload files for a lot of things so I can reload them when I save them automatically, so I don't have to quit Vim to fix bugs in them.)
