I realized I always write my comments as if the reader and I are sharing this nightmare together. I write "we" a lot even though it's... just me.
This comment is in a library I created/maintain (https://github.com/jimkeller/traversable_menu), and when I'm releasing code open source I try to maximize the number of detailed comments. I'm not always quite as generous with comments (even though I should be), but I always add them to a piece of code that's not immediately clear, or where it actually looks wrong (I've been known to comment "//this looks backwards but trust me it's not, because [reason]").
