IMO, tables are the right way to do layout and one of the most important parts of a reasonable UI toolkit. I ported my layout from libgdx to Swing, though I don't use it in Swing anymore: https://github.com/EsotericSoftware/tablelayout It has debug line visualization and I agree that helps a lot during development.
