Synology Photos for Photographers
I did the latter, and used a python script (https://github.com/andrewning/sortphotos) to prepare and organise a folder by year/month/day before import (this doesn't affect how photos presents images, which uses the exif data, but helps me).

Importing LOTS of photos and videos into Synology Photos DSM 7.01
Had a similar problem in the past, I used that script to sort the photos after uploading: https://github.com/andrewning/sortphotos. Ran it on sshfs, but it should also work directly on the NAS
