• Which motherboard and CPU does anyone recommend for a router?

  I have an APU2 E4 running OpnSense and strongly recommend it. The CPU has PSP, but it is not enabled. I had to double check the claim it has PSP as that didn't sound right....PC engines publishes schematics( and pretty everything else for the boards, why would they use a user limiting feature like PSP?

  You should make sure that you've enabled Core Performance Boost. Have a look at the TekLager site on getting gigabit on APU2 for tweaks you can make to BSD/OPNSense. I've never found that enabling hardware CRC, TSO or LRO have made much difference, so I've always left them disabled. Consider disabling the SPECTRE and MELTDOWN BSD mitigations.

• Can you update bios firmware from OPNSense GUI?

  If you have Coreboot, I'm going to assume you have an APU2 from PCEngines. The Coreboot bios can be updated via SSH, or direct terminal access. Have a look at the PC Engines github page.
