The windower github has some very basic example files. Most modern gearswap lua's have a lot of added QoL features, but if you're looking for something short to get used to how things work, these are solid, if sparse.

I haven't messed with the DressUp addon very much myself, but as I understand it, yeah you totally could reskin any weapon to any other weapon. If changing weapon types, it will correctly change your attack animations to match your preferred look, this will lead to a bit of animation jank on weaponskills. I'd imagine this is less of a problem going from a two-handed weapon to a one-handed weapon than vice-versa. Some of the really "weighty"-looking GS weaponskills like Torcleaver might look a little exaggerated with a regular sword, but using a very agile-looking ws like Vorpal Blade with a greatsword would look kinda silly.

The good news. There is a huge list of Events like the "target change" event provides ID info that can be used to get your target's name, "chat message" event can read anything in the game's log, both system combat messages and player's conversation. It is also easy to see when items have added to the loot pool and whether people have casted lots. Same for obtaining items or losing items out of bags.
Could it be possible to hide the addon XIVBar?
