My gut feeling (unburdened by the thought process) suggests that :exec might not mess with the undo tree, trigger painting updates (possibly with syntax highlighting as well), writing changes to the swapfile, etc. Do you get similar behaviors if you clear some settings like the ones in the LargeFile plugin

You can also try installing the LargeFile plugin. It checks the file size before opening it and automatically turns syntax highlighting off, along with some other specific options.
